WHAT IS MINDFULNESS?

Mindfulness is a mind – body practice that can help people change the way they think about their experiences and their ability to handle stressful situations. Mindfulness is not a new concept but is one that is becoming increasingly popular with people who wish to take a more holistic approach to their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. Research has shown that the practice of Mindfulness has positive effects on whole person health including mind, brain, body and behaviour. When we talk of mindfulness we are exploring the art of living in the moment.

Our modern busy lives often leave little time for doing nothing and we have become physically charged to not be still, do nothing and allow ourselves to be bored. Almost everything is available on demand – tv, messaging, news feeds, shopping. All these things can be positive but they can also have a negative effect on our health. Taking the time each day to turn our attention away from our phones, tv, work and even other people to sit, be still, patient and present in the moment can have a positive effect on our mental health.

Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment and non judgementally – Jon Kabat-Zinn

Mindfulness is not a quick fix solution, it takes time to learn and ongoing practice to see results. But, if the exercises are done on a daily basis and become a feature of your life then, over time, mindfulness can become part of your life.
